Outrage Over Hunters “Orgy Of Blood & Death” Slaughter

Spanish big game hunters are in the headlines around the world over what environmentalists and animal rights groups have slammed as an “orgy of blood and death.”

The outrage stemmed from a €1000 per hunter shoot, which took place at the Los Posteruelos Estate, in the Sierra Morena, outside Cordoba, in Andalucia.

Some 70 hunters killed at least a dozen wild boars and deer each, bringing a tally of 447 animals by the end of the shoot.

The enormous estate is fenced in, which meant the animals were not able to escape the slaughter.

The images, which were released by Ecologists In Action of the hundreds of dead animals lying side by side in their own blood has made headlines around the world.

Joaquin Reina from Ecologists in Action called the hunt an “orgy of blood and death,” saying that it shows the ” daily life of most of the fenced estates in Sierra Morena, but also throughout Andalusia, with some 500,000 hectares fenced, Extremadura, Castilla-La Mancha and the Levante region.’

He went on to say that : “The only defence is escape and this is absolutely diminished by wire fences.”

However, Manuel Gallardo, president of the Royal Spanish Hunting Federation defended the hunt saying they are “necessary due to the overpopulation of certain species”.

It is estimated that the hunting industry generates around €6.5billion a year for the Spanish rural economy.

It is not the first time that Spanish hunters have made headlines – last year Spanish hunters crossed the border into Portugal, killing 540 deer.
