This is the moment Spanish police officers surround a man bleeding heavily into a city fountain who had earlier been running through the streets naked and according to eyewitnesses was shouting “Allahu Akbar”.
The incident in which police officer jumped into the fountain to pull him out after he collapsed took place on Plaza Roma in the city of Zaragoza in the north-eastern Spanish region of Aragon at around 11.40am on Tuesday 23rd November.
The local authorities have confirmed that the man’s self-inflicted stab wounds caused his death.
The police told the EFE Agency that eyewitnesses reported the man wandering the streets while naked, shouting and causing concern among local residents.
As reported by several Spanish media sources including Antena3, some witnesses claimed he had a knife in his hand, was shouting “Allahu Akbar” and was Moroccan, however, this has not been confirmed by local authorities.
Police teams and an ambulance were sent to the scene and the man was found in the fountain on Plaza Roma where he then reportedly stabbed himself with his knife several times.
In the footage, the man is seen standing in the fountain with blood running down his front and into the water as he suddenly collapses.
The surrounding cops then approach the man and drag him out of the water.
Paramedics attempted to save the man’s life at the scene, but to no avail, according to the newspaper Heraldo de Aragon.
Eyewitnesses said he appeared like he was in his early twenties and was very thin.
One resident said: “He was very upset, screaming. He was carrying a small knife. He ran to the fountain, screaming without stopping, he walked around the fountain, barefoot and naked. He raised his arms but he did not threaten anyone. He was in his own world.”
According to reports, some locals hid in a supermarket near the plaza when the nude man was roaming the streets with the knife.
It is currently unclear why the man allegedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” and fatally stabbed himself.
The police investigation is ongoing.
