Angela Merkel Receives Prestigious European Award In Yuste
The award is granted by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation in recognition of people, institutions and projects that have contributed to the construction of the European Union and have been characterised by their commitment to the enhancement of European values.
On this occasion, the jury highlighted Angela Merkel’s “long career in the service of Europe”, “having been a staunch defender of the process of European integration and of Europe’s important strategic role in mutual understanding on an international scale”.
Angela Merkel is the second German chancellor to receive this prize, it had previously been awarded to Helmut Kohl in 2006.
She is the third woman to be decorated, after the former President of the European Parliament, Simone Veil (2008), and the driving force behind the ‘Erasmus’ programme, Sofia Corrad
