An aardvark (Orycteropus afer) gave birth to a completely healthy baby at Valencia´s famous Bioparc zoo last month.
The new birth of one of the ‘strangest’ animals took place by the zoo´s termite mound in July.
The park team explained that in the case of such special animals as aardvarks the technical team performs ultrasound scans on the female when it suspects that she may be pregnant and they were already on alert before the imminent parturition to implement the corresponding protocol.
Bioparc Valencia released a statement saying :” The newborn weighed 1.9 kilograms and until it reaches 2.5 kilograms it is controlled that it is fed correctly and strict monitoring of the temperature and humidity of the environment is maintained.
” Every night the keepers carry out an exhaustive review of the baby, of which the sex is still unknown, clean it, weigh it and moisturize its skin. “
According to the zoo, in order to promote the well-being of the mother and the newborn, they remain separated from the father and are not yet in public view.
