Madrid Court Sentences “King of Cachopo” To 15 Years For Murder
A court in Madrid has sentenced César Román, 47, known as the King of Cachopo, for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Heidi Paz in 2018.
The sentence, follows the unanimous guilty verdict handed down by the jury on June 1, also means he will have to pay compensation to the victims mother and son of nearly 250,000 Euros
He was found him guilty of killing Heidi Paz, 25, and dismembering her after not accepting that she wanted to finish with their relationship.
The Prosecutor’s Office had requested 15 years and 5 months in prison for murder and desecration of a corpse.
The remains of Paz were found inside a suitcase in a warehouse that Román had rented on August 13, 2018.
By the time the remains were discovered, Román had already disappeared and disconnected his mobile . The police arrested him three months later in Zaragoza, where he had been living under a false identity, working as a cook.
During the trial he maintained his innocence and claimed his former partner was either living in her native Honduras or had been killed by an alleged organized drug gang.
Both of these claims were rejected by prosecutors who said that he murderd her at dawn on August 5, 2018 after the girl went to his apartment in Vallecas after going to celebrate a birthday with some friends.
Román’s fingerprints in various places in the warehouse and in addition police officers found the victim’s mobile phone in Román’s apartment when he was arrested in Zaragoza.
The jury took a day and a half of deliberation to reach a guility decision.
