Skier Survives Avalanche In Spanish Pyrenees

This is the dramatic moment a man skis down a steep slope just as it breaks away from the cliff face and turns into an avalanche that he appears lucky to escape from.

The incident took place at the Astun ski resort near the town of Canfranc in the northern Spanish province of Huesca in the Pyrenees mountain range on Saturday.

The skier, name and nationality not disclosed, was skiing on the Escalar peak at an altitude of around 2,200 metres when he was surprised by the sudden avalanche.

In the footage shared online by the local fire brigade’s canine unit, the man is seen skiing down the slope just as a large mass of snow breaks away from the slope.

Amid thunderous noise, the skier is seen being swept away by the avalanche and disappearing under the fast-moving mass for a moment before reappearing and sliding along on his bottom.

The skier was reportedly unharmed in the incident.

The fire brigade warned skiers of the dangers of avalanches in the area at the moment and that there are more storms and strong winds during the winter period.

The meteorological agency also said there is currently a high risk of avalanches on slopes above 2,000 metres and that skiers should exercise caution.
