Locals Grab Cash Off Ground After Bungled Robbery
This is the moment residents picked up tens of thousands of Euros off the pavement after bank robbers dropped one of the swag bags while robbing a couple depositing the cash at the bank.
The incident took place in the city of Barcelona in the north-eastern Spanish region of Catalonia when the robbers attacked a couple depositing the cash at the Santander Bank on the afternoon of 17th August.
The married couple, named not disclosed, were reportedly carrying 70,000 EUR (63,121 GBP) to pay into the bank when the robbers struck.
However, before the couple could carry out the transaction, the robbers grabbed the bag and tried to escape.
According to Niusdiario, the gang-of-four was aware of the large deposit and waited for the couple to arrive at the bank before striking.
One suspect reportedly dropped the bag, spilling its contents onto the pavement, while fleeing.
The video shows the moment local residents pick up dropped banknotes from the pavement.
According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, the couple lost around 20,000 EUR in the incident.
There were conflicting reports that the money came from an armed robbery on a bank, however a Mossos d’Esquadra (Catalan police) spokesperson told Newsflash: “It was not from a bank heist.
“It was a couple depositing the money at the bank who was the victims of a violent robbery.”
The spokesperson added: “They had a bag with what seems to be a large amount of money that they were going to deposit, but it was taken from them.
“There is a formal complaint. The open investigation is taking its course and there is no further information we can add at this time.”
