The incident was filmed in the city of Seville in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia and the footage was later shared on Twitter by the police where it has been viewed 260,000 times.

According to local media, the unnamed man saw the dog struggling in the River Guadalquivir near Los Remedios Bridge.

The female cop also had to get wet to help rescue the pooch, as seen in the video clip.

The dog, identified as Carlitos the dachshund, was safely returned to its owner.

Nobody was hurt in the river rescue.

Netizen ‘Dvuelvminfancia’ said: “I imagine it is not easy to climb the stairs with a dog. Well done to the cop, but also that guy who helped to rescue it too. The animal could have drowned in the river.”

‘Daniroyo17’ commented: “Well done to the police officer and the citizen who jumped into the river to help the dog. Great stuff!”
