Tragedy As Woman Dies From Falling Palm Tree In Majorca
A 41-year-old woman has died after a palm tree fell on her during strong winds in Majorca.
Local media report the woman, who has not been named but was of Brazilian nationality, was killed when the crown of a palm tree fell on her near Palma Cathedral in the city of Palma in the Spanish Balearic island of Majorca.
She was reportedly walking with her partner and her daughter when the incident occurred and the girl, 7, whose name has not been reported, was injured and taken to hospital. The mother died at the scene despite undergoing CPR from paramedics, according to reports.
Paramedics, firefighters and police were all dispatched to the scene.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) report that winds of up to 80 kph (50 mph) were recorded in the Balearic Islands this weekend.
The Spanish President Pedro Sanchez wrote on social media: “Terrible news from the Balearic Islands. All my affection and solidarity goes out the family of the deceased woman in Palma after part of a palm tree fell on her.”
The emergency services in the Balearic Islands dealt with 126 incident on Sunday due to the winds, with 63 of the incidents coming from fallen trees.
The National Police have confirmed they are investigating the woman’s death. No arrests have been reported.
There are no updates on the condition of the injured girl.
