A ‘Walter White’ man has died and four others were injured after a huge explosion ripped through his house where he was allegedly using chemical products to grow cannabis.
The incident took place on Monday at a home on Arzobispo Olaechea street, in the city of Valencia, in the eastern Spanish region of the same name and two minors were among those injured.
The emergency services received a call stating there was a fire and when police officers arrived at the scene they reportedly found a man lying on the ground with serious burns all over his body.
According to the police, the man explained to the officers that he had accidentally caused an explosion in his house while using chemical products on cannabis plants. Police said the explosion was caused by the chemicals.
The man, who has not been named in reports, was taken to the La Fe hospital in Valencia, but he went into a coma on his way to the hospital and died shortly after, according to reports.
Police also found the victim’s 30-year-old girlfriend at the scene with second-degree burns to her legs. Her life was not in danger and she was arrested for alleged crimes against public health and other damages, local media reported.
Three neighbours, a 47-year-old man, and two children, aged five and nine, were attended at the La Fe hospital for smoke inhalation.
Nearby houses were evacuated and police officers asked neighbours to put wet towels around their front doors to stop the smoke from going into their houses while firefighters were extinguishing the fire.
Roman, a neighbour who witnessed the incident, told local newspaper Las Provincias: “I saw the young man on the ground, naked, he only had a small piece of clothing stuck to his burnt body and he was screaming. It was terrible.” He added that the man was screaming “I was burnt, I was burnt!”
It is unclear if the investigation is ongoing or if the woman has been charged. It is unclear exactly what kind of chemicals the man was handling.
