Women: Sex Crimes Now Part Of Daily Routine In Magaluf

This is the moment a group of young women perform a choreographed dance routine in the street in protest at sexual violence – amid claims that such crimes are now ‘part of the daily routine in Magaluf’.

The number of rapes and sexual assaults on the popular tourist island of Majorca.

The Feminist Movement of Majorca staged the protest in the Spanish Balearic island’s lively resort of Magaluf which is hugely popular with Brits and is famous for bars and nightclubs.

Eyewitnesses with smartphones filmed the scene as eight young women performed the dance routine to Lady Gaga’s song ‘Til it Happens to You’ which she wrote for the 2015 documentary film The Hunting Ground about campus rape in the US.

At one stage they all donned white overalls decorated with handprints over their breasts and private parts.

The protest carried the slogan, ‘Solo si es si’ (Only a yes is a yes), to show women are “fed up of sex violence” during the summer tourist season.

About 40 people turned up to support the performance and they applauded the dance routine warmly as it finished.

The Feminist Movement of Majorca said it wanted to draw attention to the growing number of rapes and sexual assaults on the island of Majorca.

Spokeswoman Teresa Mendez said: “People come to party here and feel that there are no laws.

“We are talking about rape and assaults that, unfortunately, have become part of the daily routine in Magaluf, one of the most affected areas which has turned into an area of impunity for sexual aggressors.”

Ms Mendez said the Balearic Islands had the second worst record in Spain, after the Catalonia region, for rape and sexual assaults.

She called on the police and other authorities to crack down on offenders and to do more to help and support victims.

During the protest, movement members distributed leaflets, translated into English and German, to make tourists aware of their concerns.
