This is the touching letter Jose Antonio Reyes’ ex-girlfriend has written to their son after the former Arsenal star died in a car crash.

Pilot Ana Lopez, Reyes’ former partner and mother to his son Jose Antonio Reyes Lopez, has written the letter to the youngster, 11 years old, after his father’s death.

In the letter, Lopez wrote: “You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option to move forward. Be strong so that what has to be, is. And what has to hurt, hurts! Learn to grow with the lessons life gives us, they aren’t always going to be easy.

“This week, reading your messages of support we can only find one word. Resilience! Capability to face life’s adversities and adapt positively to a traumatic situation, turning pain into a driving force to overcome it and come out strengthened. Thank you everyone for so many messages of affection.”

Reyes’ only son has recently moved from the youth team of Leganes to Real Madrid, making the move to his father’s former team after the striker’s untimely death.

Reyes, 35, and his cousin, Jonathan Reyes, 23, were killed in the crash on the A-376 motorway near the town of Alcala de Guadaira in southern Spain.

His other cousin Juan Manuel Calderon, 22, suffered serious burns after trying to save the pair from the vehicle whilst it was on flames and remains fighting for his life in hospital with burns to 60 percent of his body.
