Pregnant Tourist Dies After Being Run Over In Barcelona

A pregnant American tourist has died after being run over by a taxi driver as she walked across a zebra crossing in Barcelona.

The incident took place at the junction of the busy Diagonal avenue with Pau Claris street in Barcelona city centre in the Spanish region of Catalonia.

The 31-year-old woman was hit by a taxi driver as she walked across a zebra crossing, according to reports.

The tourist, who was six months pregnant, was treated by paramedics with the help of police officers before being rushed to the nearby Sant Pau hospital in a critical condition.

A city council press statement said the American woman and the baby she was carrying both died in the accident after an emergency cesarean was performed to try and save the baby girl.

Local media report the taxi driver was forced to undergo a breathalyser test and tested negative for alcohol and drug consumption.

An official source said: “The taxi driver was on the road and the woman was crossing the road on the zebra crossing.”

Four pedestrians have been killed in traffic accidents this year in Barcelona according to reports and the junction where the latest incident
occurred is an accident hotspot.

Barcelona’s city council are working to reduce the number of people who die on the city’s roads by 30 percent.

An investigation into the incident has begun and no arrests have been reported.
